I had to be crazy to be standing outside in this insane July, Texas heat, just to get a few minutes with a certain Texas artist, but then again, fans do this very thing all the time. So the scene was set, July at midday, 104 outside, and no breeze. I should be back in the VIP trailer, but I couldn't resist seeing this sound-check. Johnny Cooper had always been an artist I had wanted to talk to about his career, and this was going to be my chance. Man it was hot. However, I was here, and I wasn't going anywhere.

An artist who has truly defined his career by his high-energy live show, and fan-friendly music, Johnny Cooper, J-Coop to his followers, definitely has secured a place among the touring faithful. Going into his eighth year as a touring artist, Johnny has no intentions of slowing down. With a crowded schedule of over two-hundred shows a year, Johnny and the band find themselves on the the road more often than at home. As is the case with most of the scenes acts, the road most certainly becomes a home away from home, yet these acts always find time to help out when their number is called. "More than anything, I'm all about trying to help out people through the power of music. It just blows me away, that through the music, how much you can do to help other people." And to me, it seemed almost second nature for Johnny to be involved with Pickin' For Preemies, with this selfless mindset of giving.

When I asked Justin how he viewed Johnny Cooper's involvement he had this to say: "He's a good buddy first of all. That's what makes it easy, whenever I've called to ask, are you in, the answer has always been yes. Johnny is faithful. As with every artist who plays the show every year, it truly is about the message, and how their hearts are tied to it. Johnny has always led the charge on that front, always willing to give his time and himself for the auction." And that really is what it's all about, the selfless giving that's been placed in the fore-front by the artists in this un-definable genre that exists somewhere between Texas and Oklahoma.

With new music always in the works, Johnny Cooper hopes to find himself back in the studio sometime at the end of the year, and yet again, taking his own brand of music to another level. An act that truly cannot be summed up by any one category or genre, Johnny Cooper delivers a funky, brash, rhythm-rich, rockin' and soulful good time. If you've never caught a J-Coop show, then you probably haven't a clue what I'm describing. His youth and experience always deliver, and helps you get a grasp on just how diverse this Texas music scene really is. I'll leave you guys with a look at another great track by this ever-evolving singer/songwriter.

With Labor Day quickly approaching, time is running out for you to get a ticket to be part of this awesome and truly worthy cause. The money raised goes to help Cook Children's Hospital NICU, where families truly have a chance to experience miracles daily. I know where I'll be this September 3rd. Johnny Cooper is by far one of the best unsigned artists I've had the pleasure of listening
to in the past 30 days. His song, Moving On (featuring Kimberly Dunn), is incredible and
I'm a fan of Johnny's music now. JC belongs to an elite group of independent artists who
I've reviewed that deserve a 4 out of 4 rating on I Am Entertainment's music reviews list.

Lets start with Johnny Cooper's voice; one of the smoothest vocal tones in the business,
this artist is deserving of national airplay, and if he gets it you can count on seeing his
face on a Grammy ballot. A true vocalist, Johnny puts on a nearly flawless performance
on this song and you can tell he had fun singing it. Of course, if your song was this cool
and your voice this amazing, you'd likely have fun singing Moving On as well. Nice touch
adding the female vocal by Kimberly Dunn, who I'd like to hear more from as well.

The song's music is equally great and contains the perfect blend of cool, calm, talent and
energy. Embodying a bevy of awesome acoustic guitar play, Moving On is a great
example of why some artists are able to build up a sizeable following and others just
straggle along.

Johnny Cooper is definitely a front-runner amongst the sea of artists in the DIY rock
music scene and the only thing standing between him and becoming a chart topping
artist is PR. I'm curious to see how far he'll go.

When it comes time to make those important decisions in life, follow your heart down the path it leads you and forget what everybody else says. It's your life, said Texas country performer Johnny Cooper. It's your destiny and it's your journey -- nobody else's.

When he was younger, the 22-year-old country rocker had a lot of people in the music industry telling him how he should run his business. He ignored the advice and now he's glad he did because a few of the guys who were doing the preaching are no longer on the scene. Not only that, but staying true to his vision has really paid off.

So, are they still criticizing him now that he's a little older and a lot more successful?

"When I was younger, yeah, but now that I'm still here, I think they respect that a little more, especially the guys who had seen me play when I was 15 or 16," he said. "You know, they thought that it was cute and wouldn't last long, but, hey, I'm still here. I've seen bands that were here when I started and are no longer playing and it gives me a little bit of drive to say that I feel like I'm doing the right thing."

So far, Cooper has garnered some serious recognition, as his first album, "Live at the Pub," was named "Best Live CD in 2006" by the Payne County Line Oklahoma Music Awards, where he was also named "Texas Entertainer of the Year" for 2006-2007. His album "Ignition" lit up the Texas country scene in 2007 by selling more than 25,000 copies, with every single from the album dominating many of the top slots on the Texas Music Chart.rn

His song, "Don't Feel Like That Anymore," is also featured on the music video game Rock Band.

So, if the critics were laughing then, they certainly aren't now.

Cooper uses his latest CD, "Follow," to deliver a message to his critics, especially with track 5, "Bring Me Down." He uses a bluesy vibe and harsh words to thumb his nose at the guys who said he wouldn't make it.

"Follow," which was released in 2009 under Tenacity Records, was produced by Dexter Green and Glenn Rosenstein. Green has not only produced rock sensation Collective Soul, but has also worked with some bands on the Texas country/red dirt scene including No Justice and the Bart Crow Band. Rosenstein brings a lot of experience to the soundboard as he has production and engineering credits that include, Ziggy Marley, James Brown, Talking Heads and Sting.

"Dex is a good friend of mine and I met him through a couple different people," said Cooper. "I felt he definitely got where I was trying to go with this record, and so I thought he would be the best bet as our producer."

"At the same time I met Glenn, and Glenn has worked with tons of people, I mean people who are just way in the upper echelons compared to where I'm at with my music," Cooper said.

"I just felt like he would be a good person to be on the team in a way to just keep everybody on track a little bit. Me and Dexter have truly, you know, it's easy for us to get lost in the music and get creative and that's a good thing, but having Glenn there was a help because he would bring everything back on track and get us back to what we needed to be focused on."

Now Cooper is focused on his next project, which he said will be a live album quickly followed up with a studio album.

Cooper also said he titled his latest CD "Follow" because he wants his fans to tag along with him as he grows musically and promises he's going to keep them rockin' and out of their seats during every performance. But when it comes to his future plans and his music, Cooper isn't following anything but his heart and gut instinct.

"Everybody has their own path and you have to make the right choices and the right decisions," said Cooper. "You've got to propel yourself or become stagnant and I'm still on the journey of trying to figure out what I'm going to do with my music over the next couple of years."

Young Johnny Cooper Stays Busy in the Red Dirt Circuit

Texas Red Dirt musician Johnny Cooper may only be 22, but at that young age he has accomplished as much, or more than many musicians will in their entire careers.

He’s sold thousands of records, his MySpace page has been visited millions of times, and he’s developed quite a following beyond the Red Dirt circuit in Texas and Oklahoma.

After graduating from high school a year early, he became a professional musician at the age of 16 and put out his first record, 2005’s Live at the Pub. The record was a tremendous success and was voted Best Live CD of 2006 by Oklahoma publication Payne County Line, beating out The Randy Rogers Band among others for the award.

Cooper has since released two studio albums, Ignition in 2006 and Follow in 2009. “You get to see me grow up, I guess,” he says of the albums, which he recorded at ages 16 and 20. “On Ignition, I really had no recording experience. I just had a bunch of songs, and a really good band around me. On Follow I got to be a lot more apart of everything that was going on. I got to put everything together the way that I wanted to.”

Lately, he’s been busy mixing his second live album, tentatively due to be released sometime in July. It’s a wonder Cooper isn’t burnt out; he averages a remarkable 200 shows a year. What keeps him going is his passion for music. “I can be as tired as I’ve ever been, and then about 30 minutes before show time I get this burst of energy. And after we play it takes me 3 or 4 hours to wind down from all the adrenaline and energy that comes from getting to play music with four other guys that are my best friends. There’s a lot of energy that comes from that and keeps you going every day.”

He and his band have traveled from Texas, as far away as L.A. and Chicago in the U.S., and even spent a week in Ireland. This year, Cooper and his band took their show beyond the road with 300 fans on a cruise to Mexico. They’re doing it again next year and information about it can be found on Cooper’s website.

To Cooper, all of the hard work and constant touring are worthwhile because of his fans. “All that really matters is that the music is good, and it feels good to you, and that people can latch onto it and want to be apart of it. That’s what’s most important. It’s just about making good music and getting it out there to the people.”

So my neighbor came up to me a while back, the always gracious LeAnn Duran. She used to own a joint in downtown Wichita Falls called the Neon Spur, one of the first places I've ever played a gig at. LeAnn had this electric guitar that she had people sign as they passed through playing gigs at the Spur over the years, and expressed interest to me in selling it for a charitable cause, specifically for CHPM here in Wichita Falls, a counseling center for children in need.

I've had the guitar awhile with me now on the road, getting other musicians that we run into to snag their autograph, as well as our own. As it stands, the guitar has the signatures of Cody Canada, Kevin Fowler, Eli Young, Brandon Rhyder and the band, the Bart Crow Band, Josh Grider, Johnny Cooper and the band, Sean McConnell, Brison Bursey, No Justice, and several others I am still trying to identify! It's a well traveled guitar that's seen many shows, with a very cool story behind it, and would look good on your wall! All signatures are obviously 100% legit. Either I personally watched everyone sign it, or LeAnn had them sign it as they played her venue, the Neon Spur of Wichita Falls.

On top of this, the band decided to throw down and include one of our own guitars, which we ( Johnny Cooper, Cody Shaw, Ben Shaw, Joe Cortez IV, and yours truly ) have signed.

So there ya have it; two guitars, one auction. All of the charitable winning bid will go to CHPM (Christ's Home Place Ministries) located here in Wichita Falls, TX. I would encourage you to check out their site for information regarding them should you have any inquiries.

Tours are no place for parents — even if you aren’t anywhere near Mötley Crüe levels of debauchery — but when you’re a red-dirt musician playing in bars and haven’t hit the legal drinking age, there’s not much of a choice.

“Those were some good ol’ times, having my mom or dad right there with me,” said Johnny Cooper, now 22. “I’ve been gigging since I was 17, if that shows you how many shows I’ve played in bars before I was old enough to be in them. I had to have my mother or father with me, and one of my band members was signed up as my legal guardian if they couldn’t be there. I even had to have an affidavit that said I was there strictly to work. Some venues wouldn’t even let me come out from backstage.”

The Texas native no longer needs legal documentation to take the stage, but he’s still younger than your average country singer. In a genre where the biggest names are well into their 30s and 40s, Cooper is making his mark at a remarkably fresh age. Thanks in part to a childhood flooded with music, he realized quickly what he’d be doing for a living.

“I was either in a dance studio or hanging out with my dad, who was running nightclubs and having live music come through,” he said. “It was one of those things that felt like I was supposed to be in the realm of what my parents were doing. It just felt right.”

So he took up the drums around 15 before a chance encounter with a show promoter led him to pick up the guitar and take a stab at singing to nab his first paid gig. Cooper’s dad encouraged him to try his hand at songwriting; he hasn’t looked back since, playing upward of 180 shows a year. After performing Friday at Wormy Dog Saloon, he’ll record a live disc over the two days following in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Youth has allowed him to avoid the heavy tolls of sustained time on the road, but it’s also come with other advantages, like a willingness and desire to deviate from the norm. His sophomore album, 2009’s “Follow,” brought in funk, R&B and pop influences to the tried-and-true red-dirt sound in which he began.

“I wanted a sound that didn’t sound like anything else around me,” Cooper said. “My whole thing since I’ve started was taking all that I love and finding a way to mend it together.”

He certainly dove into decidedly non-red-dirt fare when seeking inspiration. He went with Sly and the Family Stone, The Roots and John Mayer, finishing with a genre-bending record that might have turned away the purists, but appealed to a wider spectrum.

“That’s understandable, and I can see why, but it seems like most people are still right there with us. For me, it comes back to an old Willie Nelson saying, something like, ‘Bring the hippies and rednecks, and bring them all together,’” he said. “I’d love to be that guy that is 70 years old, still out onstage playing music for people. … I look forward to that more than anything.”

Community Connection: Store #280 Makes Julian’s Rock Star Dream Come True

The following Community Connection story was submitted by Irma Spence, Product Process Supervisor from Store #280 in Midland, Texas.

I’m a Product Process Supervisor at Store #280 in Midland, Texas, and I also volunteer as a Make-A-Wish Granter. In October 2009, MAW contacted me about a wish kid – six-year-old Julian. When I met him, I immediately fell in love with his smile and serious bashfulness. He drew me pictures of what he dreamed about most – a guitar. “Because I want to be a rock star!” he said. With the help of MAW and the team at Store #280, I started working towards making Julian’s dream come true at the Red Dirt Music Fest in May of 2010, a benefit for the Midland MAW.

In the months leading up to the event I met with Julian weekly. Every other week Alex Rios, a Home Theater Specialist from #280, would get together with Julian and have guitar jam sessions.

One of our CSMs, John Burkholder, knew Cody Baker, owner of Lone Star Productions and the guy organizing the Red Dirt Music Fest. We contacted Cody and with his help arranged for Johnny Cooper, a Red Dirt singer out of Wichita Falls, Texas and performer at the upcoming Red Dirt event to do an in-store acoustic set with Julian while in town for another event. It was a nice trial run for the upcoming music fest.

Prior to the concert, t-shirts, guitar pics and rock candy with Julian’s logo on them were donated for Julian’s fans. MAW also threw in a few Best Buy gifts for Julian including a 32” Insignia LCD TV, Wii Rock Band Hero, Z5 drum set and guitar lessons.

The day of the event, a tour bus arrived at Julz’s (aka Julian’s) house to take him to the venue where adoring fans lined up on the street cheering for him. Shortly after, Johnny Cooper arrived and hung out with Julz posing for pictures and talking music before going on stage. It was a cool turn of events when Johnny asked Julz for an autograph.

In front of an estimated 10,000 fans, Julz was given a Gibson Dot electric guitar courtesy of Mark Kirklin, Senior Entertainment Manager for Best Buy, and Gibson guitars. Then Julz and Johnny Cooper took the stage. It was a sight to see Julz jamming on his very own electric guitar and Johnny singing along with him. The crowd went wild as Julz threw out guitar picks and t-shirts. It was amazing to see Julian’s wish come true and knowing that so many people at Store #280 made it possible.

PICKIN’ FOR PREEMIES RAISES BIG $$$

Saw on Twitter that Justin Frazell’s (The Ranch, FT. Worth) Pickin’ for Preemie’s benefit event last week raised $100,000! And $18,000 of that was thanks to Johnny Cooper! Each VIP package contained a catered BBQ meal, the usual autographed guitar/merchandise plus a 60 minute acoustic concert at a private event (with no media advertising or admission charge). When the 2 main bidders got up to $9K, Justin asked Johnny if he would offer to do 2 packages at that price as opposed to a "winner takes all" scenario and all parties agreed! Awesome news!

Johnny Cooper at the Drunken Mule, Commerce

No matter what their reasons were, they came. Johnny Cooper and his band of brothers filled the Drunken Mule in Commerce Sept. 4 with people of all ages but with one mutual reason — love for this 21-year-old who has been setting the music world on end for years.

Coop’s band of brothers includes Ben Shaw on the lead guitar (and on which Johnny is displaying more talent on his own Gibson with every performance); Cody Shaw on bass, and yes, he is Ben’s son; Nick Gharbari on three sets of keyboards; and Joe Cortez IV, aka Joey, on drums; road manager who multi-tasks as sound man and best friend, Tim Gamble; and merch man Derek Burchfield.

There were two bonuses at the Mule with this show. Lighting artist Charlie Jack Daniel worked his magic on stage, weaving lights in and around the performers, spotlighting leads, and otherwise adding interest to it all. After Coop finished his first song, Dustin Perkins band arrived, just to pass out a passel of free CDs, some of which were printed up especially for the show as advance publicity for the September 23 Bois D’Arc Bash. His ‘Hollywood Handshakes’ created quite a stir of curious new fans.

Fans commented:

• Paige — “I came to see Johnny cause he’s cute.” Paige and her friend had never seen the Johnny Cooper show live before and arrived hours early. About 45 minutes into the show, Paige added that she could not say Johnny’s music is also awesome, amazing.

• Honor and Kelady — These two young ladies, sporting black X’s on the backs of their hands, indicating they are not yet 21, said it was about the 20th time they have been to a Johnny Cooper show. Why? “He mixes country and rock and jazz and blues. And he writes his own songs, all of them. If he ever does a cover, such as a Michael Jackson, he does it so much better, and he’s a great guy. He brings everything to the table.” The only thing they forgot to mention was Cody’s energetic, enthusiastic hip-hop lead.

• Jackson — ”This is where the chicks are.”

• Martin — ”I can dance to his music or go up front and just listen. He writes about things I understand.”

There was one young lady who joined Johnny ‘up front’ a little too close when she climbed onto the stage. Garett quickly persuaded her that the stage was already full enough.

Twice in the same week, Johnny Cooper, Ben Shaw, Cody Shaw, Nick Gharbari, and Joe Cortez IV — who KHYI D.J. Brett Dillon suggested, aptly, could be called Johnny Cooper & The Revolution — drove their box-trailer-toting white van into fan-packed North Texas venues. Twice in the same week, those fans got the show they anticipated, in the unique style that Johnny Cooper fine tunes with every performance.

Last Saturday, Johnny and the band followed Pumpjack Mary at Shooters in Gainesville, a bar that closed shortly for remodeling. It’s back open again, in style, including its unique floor covering that greets patrons at the front door, a collection of posters from past performances, many autographed by the performers themselves.

Sunday, the Bird Dogs opened for Johnny at Love & War in Texas, another in the continual summer series, Shiner Sundays, which is also broadcast from 4-6 p.m. on KHYI as the bands perform live.

The band — let’s just go ahead and call them the Revolution for the moment — give every show their 1.5 to 2 hours of high energy, style developed into one cohesive unit, and plain ol Texas fun. This band acts professionally without exception. They don’t drink before or during their sets, and there’s never one profane word out of their mouth. It’s serious work, steeped in passion for their profession.

Most of the songs Johnny writes, and the band arranges them collectively. Nick works on two keyboards, and has been learning the guitar as well. He stepped away from the keys at Larry Joe Taylor’s festival in April for the first time, and in these two most recent performances is already showing remarkable development. But what can you expect from someone with such talent!

Joe, on the drums, is a whole event in himself, treating the drums as a dancer would treat the dance floor. Bass-playing Cody, who is a skilled lead electric guitarist, seems to have the most fun on stage, but that may be just the outsides showing what everyone is feeling on the insides. He entertains. ‘nuf said. Ben, Cody’s dad, cranks up his guitar, meriting such superlatives as superb quality and uplifting and inspirational.

Cooper’s songwriting is maturing quickly over time, too. His youthful background — the 21-year-old has been writing, singing, songwriter, since he was 15 — doesn’t show in the lyrics. Instead, they have a maturity that can be appreciate by any age — appreciation, defiance, patriotism, emotional — but which might meet the ears of his peers with quicker comprehension.

The only thing that hasn’t changed in the past couple of years is the bands personnel. These guys, along with the logistics team of Tim Gamble and Derek Burchfield, spend hours, days, and weeks together on the road, and it seems they bond tighter with time.

This young man, Coop, and the aka Revolution, will be back in this area Sept. 4, at the Drunken Mule in Commerce., and then at T-Bones Bar & Grill in Denison on a Thursday night, Sept. 23.

CU@SC season kicks off with Johnny Cooper in concert 08/23/2010

Cameron University\'s CU@SC (CU at the Simmons Center, Duncan) series for the 2010-11 season kicks off with a toe-tapping concert featuring Red Dirt rocker Johnny Cooper on Saturday, September 11. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Simmons Center Theatre in Duncan. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at door. Cameron students, faculty and staff receive one free ticket with current Cameron ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Simmons Center box office or by calling 580-252-2900. The concert is made possible through the assistance of the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Hailing from Wichita Falls, Texas, Johnny Cooper\'s musical interest was sparked by watching live performances of a southern rock, country and blues hybrid called Red Dirt. Inspired to develop his own take on Red Dirt Music, he started performing at family gatherings, frat parties and small bars throughout Texas and Oklahoma at the age of 15 and released his first live cd one year later. A studio album, airplay, radio promotion, a distribution contract and agent soon followed. Today\'s Country Magazine raves about Cooper\'s latest CD, FOLLOW, citing Cooper\'s individual style as \"a fresh sound that has the ability to expand through multiple genres.\" Gifted with a rich emotive voice that illuminates his lyrics, Cooper says the disc “is another chapter of my life, every song is a short snippet of all the things I have encountered in the past few years, good times...bad times...and everything in between. I believe the music has evolved because I have evolved...the older you get the less and less you are scared to try new things, branch out and test your limits.” CU@SC will continue on December 10 with a Victorian Holiday Tea hosted by Dr. Vivian Thomlinson at the Simmons Center Chisholm Hall at 5 p.m. In 2011, CU@SC will feature the 2011 Cameron Student Art Exhibit Preview and Reception, Dr. Hyunsoon Whang in concert, a Children’s Concert presented by the Cameron University Percussion Ensemble, and a combined performance of the CU Percussion Ensemble with the Centennial Singers. Van Died & Shows Cancelled 07/30/2010

Hey friends and fans,

At 6:30am this morning on our way to Chicago, the van died, the motor stopped and blue smoke came out the exhaust pipe. We were in the middle of nowhere, IL, and the Ford Dealership didn't open until 7:30am

We had it towed to the dealership and didn't find out that the entire engine would have to be pulled out, and would take about a week to fix!

Thanks to some great friends, me and the band are going to be able to get back to Texas later tonight, while a tow truck takes the van and trailor to Ft. Worth to be repaired.

Next week we have a bus for the show run, but that doesn't make us feel any better about this weekend's shows. We have been looking forward to getting up North for our friends and fans.

To all that support us, we are very very sorry, and we promise to make it up to you by rescheduling the shows soon. Again, we are SORRY we are going to miss this weekend.

Only 21, Johnny Cooper kicks up the Red Dirt

Johnny Cooper may be only 21 but, in a way, he is an old road dog in the Texas and Red Dirt music scenes.
So far he has released one live album, two studio albums and garnered six Top 10 songs on the Best in Texas music magazine chart since kicking off his career at the age of 16.

“I think If you would have asked the 16-year-old me I would have said you were crazy,” Cooper said in a recent telephone interview. “I am really more happy with the achievements I have behind me right now than I could ever explain to you in words, my friend.”

Johnny Cooper performs with Sean McConnell tonight at Lucky Mule Saloon as a part of the Lucky Mule/99.8 KBCY free summer concert series.

It all started when Cooper came home from school one day and wrote two songs. From that point on he knew he wanted to make and write music.

“Music has always been in my family and I feel like I may never get this chance again so I am going to give it 110 percent no matter what. Always,” Cooper said. “Whether it’s three people watching us play or 3,000, you are going to get the same show out of us just because I feel like you have to play every show like it may be your last show.”

Cooper has expanded his territory from Texas and Oklahoma to about six more states including Missouri and Illinois, a far cry from Wichita Falls where he started.

Getting out on the road to new areas is an adventure for the young Cooper.

“It’s been interesting. It’s fun getting to play all these places and getting to do some stuff that we don’t usually get to do,” Cooper said of playing new markets. “The funnest (sic) about it is that when you go out to these different markets where nobody knows you it’s like starting over again. But it’s a kind of fun and thrilling feeling.
Lately Cooper has been promoting his most recent album, 2009s “Follow.”

“Right now I am more proud of this record that we have out more than anything. I feel like it’s been the biggest thing for us to start achieving what my main goal, as a musician is, which is to just kind of create and find your own sound,” Cooper said of the disk.

Cooper has received radio support from the album — mainly from the singles “Crazy” and “Bring Me Down” — which is driving audience attendance numbers.

“We have been playing some of these show were 400-500 people show up. That is just amazing to me. Just because I remember playing to two people or three people,” he said. “So now that we are actually getting people or more people out to the shows like that, it just kind of boosts your adrenaline and you just want to put on a really good show and have more fun than we ever had.”

All of this, he feels, has kind of been like a domino effect. “A lot of it is just hitting the road hard and get out there and play as much as you can,” he said.

Follows a Family Tradition

Johnny Cooper set for Cadillac Ranch’s Grand Opening!

Lawton, OK – Bobby Dale McFarland of the Bobby Dale Band and Shannon Bonds of Duncan, OK are pleased to announce the grand opening of Lawton’s new live music venue, the Cadillac Ranch at 1924 South Hwy 277 just off 11th street, east of 11th Street near the Lawton Airport.

Last year, Bobby Dale’s single “Crazy Beautiful” from the “Game of Affairs” CD remained in the top 30 on the Texas Music Charts for five months. However, this new venture means more to him. For Bobby Dale, it means following in his family’s tradition of performing music as well as offering a live music venue for both the public and musicians. The Cadillac Ranch was once home to Bobby Dale’ family venue called Branders. Music legends and superstars such as Gary Stewart, Johnny Paycheck, Tim McGraw, Dixie Chicks, and Gary Allen have all performed in this building. Shannon notes, “That with Johnny Cooper’s recent first performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville it just made sense to have him kick off the building’s next generation of performers and patrons.”

Bobby Dale and Shannon have set as the Cadillac Ranch’s mission to support the music industry in Oklahoma. They want to bring live music to audiences who have gotten used to prerecorded music, to have a musician friendly venue, and offer opportunities for the up and coming performing artists.

Cadillac Ranch is open Thursdays through Saturday. The week begins with Thursday night Acoustic Shows, Friday and Saturday Night Live Music. Also, “DJ David T” will expose audiences to the Oklahoma/Texas music scene in addition to other forms of Country Music. Shannon is grateful to have networked with regional venues in both Oklahoma and Texas in booking bands as it allows for block booking. He, says “That this means that musician’s can optimize their touring schedules and makes highly sought performers look seriously at coming to our area. We appreciate the opportunity to have as mentor and neighbor Bill Black of Wall Street in Duncan, OK. With his years of experience in presenting live music, we have to take our hats off to him.” In addition, we want to recognize Johnny Cooper’s Management and Creative Team.

Bobby Dale notes that April 16 is a landmark for both Shannon and I and we are grateful for the support from the friends, family, fans of country/red dirt music/southern rock who have help make this dream come true…not to mention the people from Oklahoma who blazed this trail for us to travel. “Also”, Shannon notes with a smile, “this is the day that you have to have your taxes in and what better way is there to celebrate.”

When Johnny Cooper was 15, he gave PJ Berry the name “Red Dirt Road Mom.”

“I kind of mothered him,” Berry laughed. “And, Stoney Larue also called me ‘Mom’ quite a bit.”

The name ‘Mama PJ’ and ‘Red Dirt Road Mom’ stuck. “Now, I’m everybody’s mama,” she laughed.

A fan of Red Dirt music for the past 12 years, she had 1,200 shirts made for the Woodystock Red Dirt Festival last year in Burkburnett. The front had the Woodystock logo and the back said, Adopted by Red Dirt Road Mom.

“Those shirts went everywhere. I have a lot of wonderful adopted kids out there, and some are my age or older.”

Her children were there for Berry last September when she was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery.

Monday, Berry completed the seventh of 12 chemo treatments, which will end in March.

“Mine is minuscule compared to friends. I have some neuropathy and headaches, but I’m not losing hair or throwing up. If I am feeling bad, I put on some makeup, do my hair and go listen to some music and feel better.”

Because she’s such a part of the red dirt community, the Iron Horse Pub and The Outlaw 94.9 are doing a benefit for her at the Pub from 4 to 10 p.m. Jan. 31

The event features Cooper, Brazos Stone, Fat Dixie, Arbuckle Express and continues to add bands.

“It really humbled me,” she said, “and it made me feel good to know they are helping me.” She will be sitting at her table near the stage and hopes to take pictures.

Berry began taking pictures of red dirt shows in 2001.

“Once I got my Kodak Easy Share in 2005, Kodak said I took about 50,000 pictures. 37,000 of those are online, and about 95 percent are music. Many are at Myspace.com/reddirtroadmom.

“If I’m not feeling good, I can sit back and look at the pictures online or go through my photo albums and think about the good times and all the fun I’ve had.”

She has also received the “Photographer of the Year&rdqu
Berry was born in Wichita Falls and raised in Iowa Park. Her husband, Ron, worked at Cryovac and owned Ron’s Garage in Wichita Falls. Their son Ronny lives in Austin.

After high school, she moved to Dallas and waitressed in Dallas Cowboy-owned clubs. She also was a hairdresser whose clients included Ross Perot’s mother, sister and secretary.

She met her husband when he was on leave from the Navy and he proposed to her one New Year’s Eve. They got married in California on March 7, 1975. When his service was up, they moved to Iowa Park.

After the birth of their son, they moved to Wichita Falls for nine years and then to Iowa Park because their son wanted to go to school there.

Berry’s most rewarding job, she said, was activities director at the University Park Manor in Iowa Park from 1988 to 1998.

The couple started listening to red dirt while visiting their son in Austin.

“What I like about red dirt is that the kids are writing their own music, and that’s what they are playing. It’s coming from their heart. It’s something they’ve done, and to me it just means more. The ones that we’ve met have always been so nice to us. We’ve also met a lot of great new old friends at the shows.”

They used to attend lots of shows in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Oklahoma, but slowed down when PJ’s health declined. The problems included being in a wheelchair for three years and a stroke that left her blind in her left eye.

“We followed the music so much, I said this isn’t going to hold me down. When I got hit with the cancer, I said this isn’t going to stop me.

“There are just too many people out there we feel like we have to go see. I have a big choice this weekend. Brandon Rhyder or Bart Crow, and it’s just killing me,” she laughed. “I hate to have to miss one to see the other.”

Guitar prodigy Johnny Cooper already an old pro at 21

Johnny Cooper's birth certificate may say he's just 21, but that's not how he sounded in a recent phone interview. Instead, Cooper seems to have a clear-beyond-his-years vision for the music he wants to make and a self-assuredness that is pretty rare for an artist so early in his career.

With his recently released CD, "Follow," Cooper made it clear that he is not going to be fenced in stylistically or bound to the expectations observers - and even his fans - might have had for the music he makes.

"I've always said that our biggest pigeonhole is the fact that you can't pigeonhole us. I love that," Cooper said. "It's almost like I feel like our music, if I had to pick a genre of what you would call our music, I would call it 'the iPod Shuffle.'"

That description is pretty accurate. Cooper said one of his goals for the CD was to have every song sound different from the next, and "Follow" is indeed an eclectic, sharply crafted and surprisingly mature album. Its songs cover plenty of ground: gritty rock ("Don't Feel Like That Anymore" and "Bring Me Down"), a bit of funky soul ("Yes My Love" and "Try"), sunny up-tempo pop ("Blue" and "Crazy"), smartly restrained rootsy pop ("Somewhere In Between") and smoldering blues-rock balladry ("Can't Hold On To You").

In some circles, this wasn't the kind of album people wanted from Cooper. In fact, a writer for the singer/guitarist's hometown newspaper, the Wichita Falls Times Record News, wrote a blistering review of "Follow." The writer, Don Chance, was a fan of Cooper's 2007 sophomore CD, "Ignition." But he felt Cooper sold out his Red Dirt music roots (a rocking country style typified by acts such as Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen and Cross Canadian Ragweed) and went pop on the "Follow" CD.

The young musician doesn't see it that way, of course. Cooper said he thinks people will get used to "Follow" as time goes on and will see it as part of a musical path that is still in its early stages.

"We're only (a few) months into having this record out," Cooper said. "I think sometimes you've just kind of got to let it marinate for a while. You've got to let it do its thing. And to the people that I guess think that we have maybe totally stepped away from what we used to do to what we're doing now, I'd tell you you're crazy, man. Come to one of our shows, and you'll see that we're bringing it all together.

"We're not scared to play songs off of the old record and then play songs off of the new record and put them all together into one show," he said.

Cooper is also wise enough to admit that he doesn't know what kind of music will inspire him 10 or 20 years from now. He just wants each of his albums to capture the music that moves him and who he is as a person at that particular point in time.

"More than anything 'Follow' is where I'm at in my life right now," Cooper said. "I always tell everybody, when I'm an 80-year-old man, I hope to have a timeline of music, you know what I'm saying. By the time I'm 80, I hope to have 20 to 30 records, and if you go listen to every one of them, you'll be able to see where I was in my life at that point in time."

Part of what "Follow" captures with its diversity is Cooper's still-developing tastes and knowledge of music.

"Especially in the last two to three years, I really started liking all kinds of music," Cooper said. "I started to really listen to different people and different styles of music and tried to listen to what makes this style of music what it is and what makes it great. I've always loved artists that were able to maybe throw you a rock tune, and then maybe throw you a funk tune, and then maybe throw you a country tune and then right back to a pop tune. We try to make sure, even in our live shows and stuff like that, that we're always constantly doing that."

The rapid growth in Cooper's music is especially impressive considering that he didn't start playing and writing music until he was 15. Up to then, he was more interested in sports than music. That changed after Cooper started taking drum lessons from a musician in Wichita Falls.

The teacher also booked shows at some local clubs, and one day, he heard Cooper sing and asked Cooper if he could learn some songs on guitar and open for a band that was playing in a couple of weeks.

Cooper went home and told his father, Jimmy, about the offer. His dad, who was managing partner at the now-shuttered Graham Central Station music club in Wichita Falls and had played in bands himself, helped his son learn 10 songs - enough for the gig.

"I went out there and played that show by myself, just me and the acoustic guitar," Cooper said. "Ever since that day, I've been playing at least one gig a week. And it wasn't but maybe a month later that my dad looked at me and he said 'You know, you're playing all these other peoples' songs. You probably could write your own songs.' And a light bulb went off in my head and it was just like 'Yeah, I could do that.' Then from that day on, that's been the only thing I've wanted to do is write my own music and play my own songs."

It didn't take long for Cooper to get his career going. He self-released a debut album, "Live at the Pub," in 2006, and followed that a year later with "Ignition," which was released on the indie label Smith Entertainment. Cooper was subsequently signed by his current label, Tenacity Records.

Over the next two years, Cooper continued to tour steadily, building a strong fan base in Texas and Oklahoma, while writing and road testing new songs along the way. Then this past spring, he teamed up with producers Glenn Rosenstein (whose credits include producing or engineering music by Ziggy Marley, the Talking Heads and Sting) and Dexter Green to record "Follow."

With "Follow" in stores and getting overall positive reviews, Cooper is back on the road playing Texas, Oklahoma and starting to branch out and play shows in other parts of the United States.

"I always want to take it as far as I can," Cooper said. "When I'm sitting in my room writing a song about myself, I'm trying to think how can somebody a million miles away still find something about this song that they can relate it to their life. More than anything, I just love to travel."

Don’t you just love it when you have high expectations for someone and they actually meet them? With all the buzz I’d been hearing about artist Johnny Cooper, I thought for sure at least a little of it must have been the LA hype machine at work. Not so. This 21-year-old’s performance at the Key Club’s Plush Lounge proved why his unique blend of rock, soul, and funk is worth talking about.

The young Texan kicked off the set with “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” a funktastic track that sounds like Maroon Five with bigger cojones. As Cooper says in this song, he’s “got a little swagger in [his] brand new step” and for good reason. The song is the opener off his third album. That’s right. This 21 year old is already releasing his third album. The very next song of the performance, “Somewhere In-Between,” begins with the line “I wonder if I’m too young for this,” and if Cooper is referencing his music career, he should just quit wondering. He commands the stage like a seasoned performer, joking with the LA crowd for complaining about the two days of bad weather (“We get ice storms in Wichita. Ice storms.”), and he reveals a level-headed maturity in his lyrics that will do him well in this crazy business.

A few songs later Cooper played “Follow,” the title track off his new album, and by this point, I was 100% with him. The Justin Timberlake-smooth voice, the sweet guitar chops, that soft Texan drawl that could convince a coyote to quit howling…this kid could lead me anywhere and I would be right behind him. His destination of choice was to the land of funk, closing the set with “Yes, My Love!” Cooper begins the song with a little Kanye before showing us what he can bring to the dance floor. This sexy, catchy track complete with hand claps (oh, how I love hand claps!) made me want to get up and move and allowed the artist to leave the audience with a little more of that swagger he mentioned at the beginning of the set. Before his performance, Cooper answered a few questions for LA Music Blog’s readers about the new album, visiting LA for the first time, and why he’s not still sitting behind a drumset.

Where and how did you get your start in music?

It’s kind of funny actually, because I was fifteen years old and I was taking drum lessons from a guy in Wichita Falls, Texas where I lived. He heard me sing one day, and he said “Do you think you’d like to open for this band? I’m booking some gigs at this pizza place.” And I said, “Well I really don’t know how to play anything on guitar.” He said, “Well do you think that you could learn about 10-12 songs and make it happen?” So I said that I could try.

I sat down with my dad, who’s a pianist, plays very well, and is good with notes. We sat down with my busted, first acoustic guitar that I had, and I learned about twelve songs in two and a half weeks. I played that gig, and played nothing but cover songs that were easy songs that were in G, C, D. Ever since that gig I’ve been playing music. I still remember the day that my dad looked at me, which was a month or two after we played that first gig, and he said, “You know, you could write your own songs.” I’ll never forget that day because it finally clicked in my head that I could just do it. From that point on all I wanted to do was write my own songs.

You mentioned that you actually started off with just drums. What made you stay with guitar?

I think it was that it was difficult for me to drum and sing at the time. Also, I think that it was more of a frontman thing, and I wanted to play that role a little bit more. It felt more natural when I picked up a guitar with singing and playing.

Is this your first time playing in LA?

It is our first gig in LA and actually the first time I’ve been in LA. It’s been an exciting past three days. We fly out tomorrow and have a gig in my hometown of Wichita Falls, Texas. We’re playing gig there in my hometown at a radio station’s big birthday party there.

You titled your newest album “Follow.” Why did you choose that title for the name of the album?

Mainly because our “Ignition” album, which is our second studio album, and this album are quite different. I recorded Ignition when I was 16 years old and going in to record “Follow,” I just turned 20 years old. I felt that I was writing some different kinds of music and experimenting with different things. The whole main reason of choosing “Follow” was number one, there’s a song on there titled “Follow”, and number two, it was saying follow us to our next step in our musical experiment.

You had a chance to work with Glenn Rosenstein and Dexter Green, who has worked with pretty much everyone, on this album. What was that experience like as opposed to what it was like working on your first album?

Dex and Glenn let me be a huge part of everything that was going on with the record. When I made “Ignition” with a guy named Mike Mclear, I kind of let him do most of it because I was so young and really didn’t know much. This go round I had a better idea of what was going to happen and how things were going to go down, so I got to play a bigger role in this record, which was a lot of fun for me. Also, Dex is one of those guys that, for some reason, we’re suppose to get together and make records. There’s something that happens when me and him get together, write songs and record stuff, that to me is just amazing. Same with Glenn. Glenn’s that guy I feel that was perfect for this record. He kept me and Dex, without putting us in a box, from getting too out there. Because you put two musicians together like me and Dex, and we can get weird on you, man, so it was good to have Glenn. With Glenn’s structure and knowledge of all the people that he’s worked with and all the hits songs he’s been a part of, it was good to have his two cents and his guidelines of everything that was going on. It was like having a good roll of duct tape. He held everything together.

You sold 25,000 copies of your last record. Now working with these producers and growing up, what can people expect from this album?

I think finally for the first time in my life I have some songs and have put out a record that I feel is totally where I’m at in my life right now. The lyrics are a little bit different. Some of the lyrics in the last record, to me, sound like a 16 year old kid, and this record, to me, doesn’t sound like that any more. I think that’s the biggest thing that you’ll notice more than anything.

Was the recording process any different working with the two producers you worked with opposed to the original album.

It was a lot different, mainly because we recorded everything in Dexter’s basement. It was cool because it was a lot different environment. It was relaxed. We pretty much started around 11 each morning and would go until about 11 each night. We took it pretty much at our own pace. Before, we had a studio and there’s only so many hours that you could be in that studio, so you felt more cramped to get a bunch of stuff done. Where with this go round, we had a lot more time and felt more relaxed. It comes across especially in the music. You can tell that we were having fun, everybody was relaxed, just chilled, and you can hear that when you listen to it.

It sounds like a mix of what you would consider red dirt music, Texas country, blues, and rock and roll. Who would you say are some of your influences, and where do they show up in your songwriting?

Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Justin Timberlake. I look up to those guys because they do something different than other people do. Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder were doing it 30 years ago, and you’re starting to see some of that funk, rock, and a combination of bunch of things put together. Overall what we’re going for more than anything, and they were going for as well, is we just want to move you. They just want you to get up and start moving. Even if you don’t want to, you just do it. I think that’s what we’re going for more than anything. Music that makes you feel good.

Tell us about your songwriting process.

It changes every day. Sometimes it starts out with a few chords and chord progressions on guitar. Some days it might start off with a lyric or something that gets stuck in my head. A lyric passage that keeps going over, and over, and over in my head, until I find the right words to fit in there. Overall if you go back and listen to my songs, I tell everyone that I hope to be a 70-year-old man some day, and you’ll be able to go back and see my whole life on CDs, but you’d get to listen to them. I think that’s something that I write my songs about more than anything. Everyday things that happen to me and everyday life experiences. I feel that when you write songs that are more like that, someone like you that’s a hundred miles away will have that much better chance of relating to it. More than anything, that’s what I go for when I write songs.

What have been some highlights this past year for you?

I got to put out a third record. If you would’ve asked me when I was 16 years old if I’d get to do that, I’d tell you that you were crazy, so I’m excited about that. We’re getting to play in LA, and we’re getting a bunch of shows in North and South Carolina. We’re starting to branch out of our comfort zone, and our comfort zone is Texas. It’s nice to have that opportunity to even have a chance to branch out. That’s the highlight more than anything. We’re getting to have some cool opportunities, and it’s been really fun to play for a whole different crowd.

I noticed that you’ve played about 800 shows, and that averages out to be about 200 a year. That’s absolutely ridiculous.

We’re on the road constantly. We fly out to Wichita Falls tomorrow [a Wednesday] and have a gig there tomorrow night. Then we play Thurs., Fri, and Sat. night as well.

What would you like to say to your fans?

I just hope that everyone enjoys our music. We’re here for one reason and that’s to play music and try to make sure that our listeners have a good time. I can guarantee that if you come out to our concerts, you’ll leave that night with a smile on your face and glad that you came out.

Country pop artist returns to Los Angeles

In the last 5 years country music icons like Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift have skyrocketed the Billboard charts. Country has slowly made its way to the pop world and a new genre called “Country pop” has emerged. Twenty-year-old Johnny Cooper, a new up and coming indie artist from Texas, has made his way all throughout the West Coast. He is returning to Los Angeles to perform an acoustic show at the Key Club today.

Cooper’s new album, “FOLLOW” has been debuted at No. 22 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” album chart. Through Cooper’s influences he has found this evocative blend of blues, rock and pop. Cooper’s influences range from Fly and the Family Stone to John Mayer, and even Kanye West.

Talking to Johnny over the phone, I asked what his inner drive to pursue music was, and he said, “In life everyone you come across finds their inner drive in what they want to do, and somewhere along the line you make a decision to pursue what you love … you can find that passion when you’re 20 or when you’re 50 … but it usually ends up being what your comfortable with and what you truly love. And this is what I love.

“I love getting up in the middle of the night with the guys if I can’t sleep and just jamming and playing music all night, that’s always been my drive,” he said.

Cooper made it clear that he wants to make a difference within the music industry and takes a lot of pride through live performances. He wants to make sure that each fan feels the same and gets the same experience.

“I would be so happy just to live and die just performing on a stage then selling 3 million records … it’s just so much more cooler to me,” Cooper said.

Though Johnny’s music is gradually climbing to the top, recently Johnny was premiered as a new up and coming artist on AOL Music. As Cooper’s music becomes more known he explained, “that there comes a point as an artist where you can’t sign and give every fan a autograph but you can definitely show your appreciation for your fans.”

The show tonight is free, and Johnny will be performing an acoustic show so you’ll get to see him at a more intimate level.

From listening to Cooper’s last album I really connected with his lyrics, they were so authentic and so simple. I personally think if John Mayer’s music and The Beatles music had a baby, it would be Johnny Cooper! If you’re someone who loves all different genres of music, you should be at the Key Club tonight.

Though listed as a country release, Johnny Cooper’s second effort, Follow, is peppered with enough pop and rock to be considered mainstream and playable on a wide spectrum of radio – and it’s a super fun album.

Cooper recently turned 21 years old, and both his music and lyrics reflect that carefree, hopeful spirit, including the ebb and flow of a rocker’s soul bubbling beneath the surface of a bluesy, almost jazzy in some spots, musician maturing in every sense of the word. Cooper’s voice has developed and evened since his debut album, Ignition, in 2007, which was decidedly more traditional country and flavored by some of his muses (for whom he also opened shows): Pat Green, Gary Allan, The Great Divide and Cross Canadian Ragweed.

Follow has the fun, bluesy guitar of Jonny Lang with the pop appeal of some of Ryan Adam’s more upbeat songs – but country, even in the most mainstream and lenient of descriptions, it is not. While Cooper has a strong voice and accomplished instrumental production, the album as a whole seems a bit scattered, reaching, unsure of itself: which describes a typical guy at the age of 21, much less a musician trying on the new skin of a new album after working the music circuit since he was a 16-year old kid in West Texas.

Among the blues riffs, against the rock spine, and amid his often soulful vocals, there is a faint pulse of country in Follow in its earnest, heartfelt need to be heard and respected. It’s a fun album that will likely appeal to a younger crowd – think those who yearn for Taylor Swift to hook up with a decent guy and keep the teardrops off her guitar.

Cooper’s someone to keep your eye on and to listen out for in the future considering the improvement he shows vocally since his debut album and the gelled sound of a new band, hand-picked by Cooper and consisting of friends and their family members. There’s a chemistry there, which with time and maturity could play out for a fantastic third album.

And if nothing else maybe Cooper could hook up with Taylor Swift for a songwriting session. I bet they have a lot in common.

There’s an edge to Johnny Cooper’s music that sets him apart from a lot of the other 20-something musicians: it’s a little southern rock, a bit of blues, a touch country and a little unpredictable, like the red dirt roads that crisscross the area where he grew up.

Having begun his musical career at 16, playing in the nightclubs and bars of Texas and Oklahoma, his second record, Follow is the next step along the pathway to becoming a national act.

Of the 10 tracks, the lyrically heavy Somewhere in Between and the classic cheatin’ song Can’t Hold On To You jump out as “must listens.”

And the first single, Bring Me Down (which Johnny calls a “musical sucker-punch” for those who have ulterior motives in life), is remarkably catchy with the refrain “I don’t need you around/I don’t need you or your town/as far as I’m concerned you just bring me down.”

A good old country boy from Texas is coming to the Key Club on the Sunset Strip and bringing strong funk-based music as mixed as an iPod shuffle.

Johnny Cooper’s young yet fresh style stems from many influences but above all, strives to make the audience have a good time.

“I have been on this kick where it is R&B and rock kind of stuff, but I have an eclectic style,” Cooper said. “For us it is all about finding the groove. If it makes you want to dance, it is probably a good thing.”

Because of his widely sampled musical taste, different styles are evident in his music, from rock and funk to generally strong country vocals.

“(Cooper’s) philosophy is that he is a member of the iPod generation,” said Scott Welch, Cooper’s manager. “He and his friends listen to music that is all over the place – he says, ‘Well, my record should be the same thing.’”

Cooper, who just turned 21, has already released three albums, the latest of which is “Follow,” which debuted at No. 22 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. It is described as a more solid reflection of his personal musical style, as compared to his first album which was written when he was just 16.

“I was a teenager on my last album and you could hear it,” Cooper said. “I got to be involved in every aspect of this new record, and I had more knowledge of what I wanted to do. We are in this phase right now of really trying to create our sound – we want to come on the radio and for people to know right away it is us they’re listening to.”

Cooper’s first album was more rock-’n’-roll based, while “Follow” has a more definitive funk sound. Only songs from “Follow” will be featured at the Key Club show.

“The biggest difference between the two records is that he’s 21, not 16,” Welch said. “This record is written by him. It is truly a reflection of where he’s going.”

Although Cooper is relatively young, his stage experience outweighs that of many starting artists and his presence relates to a wide spectrum of audiences.

“One of the advantages is that (Cooper) has ... probably played almost 800 shows – that is a big learning curve for an artist,” Welch said. “He has a really unique cross-generational style that everyone seems to gravitate (to).”

This musical magnetism has been very appropriate to the college environment. With college towns being a large portion of the shows Cooper has recently played, Hollywood, only miles from UCLA, should be no different in terms of attracting a student crowd.

“We play a lot of college towns in Texas. As far as region is concerned, that doesn’t affect anything,” said Cody Shaw, Cooper’s bass guitarist and lead band member. “I just like to let the sincerity of the music tell (the story). Music has no home and isn’t just from Texas – that’s just where we’re from.”

Cooper looks forward to his Los Angeles debut and suggests that music should span long distances in its universality.

“It is one of my goals to play at different places throughout the U.S. and the world,” Cooper said. “When I am writing music, I want to write something that will touch somebody a 100 million miles away.”

Another important goal for the band is just to get the audience to dance and have a good time.

“Our goal number one right now is a funk-based music that people can groove and relax to,” Shaw said. “(We want) people in the back of the bar who are having a conversation with their backs toward us to still bob their heads while they’re talking but not know why, just because they’re grooving so hard.”

While the band is excited for the Los Angeles debut, it is just a step in the calculated public emergence path for Cooper. Each show is taken as a single step at a time, and the audience is always considered.

Whether or not Los Angeles is ready for a young artist with a simple, feel-good and characteristically unjaded sound, the show promises a good time.

“I’m extremely excited, but I’m new to the bigger side of the business – it’s just now starting to get more serious,” Shaw said. “I’m just an old country boy from Texas. If just one person enjoys the show, that makes my day. Whatever happens will happen.”

It’s not like we haven’t seen our share of soulful, blues-influenced rockers in recent years – guys like Marc Broussard and Jonny Lang come to mind immediately. Well, you can add 20-year-old Texan Johnny Cooper to that list. Cooper is back with his sophomore effort, Follow, which follows his 2007 debut Ignition. The kid can sing, he can play, and he can write catchy tunes – all with the attitude that usually comes with years of seasoning. Call him an old soul, but whatever it is, it’s still unique to have this much talent at this tender of an age. Follow is oddly classified as a country release, but if it is, it’s more of the old-school Americana country and not the pop/schlock that rules country radio. Cooper is more a rocker that happens to be from Texas, and he’s already built up a nice following in his home state with a compelling vocal ability and guitar skills that defy chronology. Some of the tracks do wear thin quickly, but most of them will have you hitting repeat – especially the southern-fried opener, “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” the ‘60s pop-inspired “Blue,” and the positively funked up “Yes My Love.” Keep an eye and an ear on this kid – if he is this talented at 20, who knows what more living and learning will do for him, and for all of us who hear and see Cooper. JOHNNY COOPER has just witnessed the highest-selling debut week in his five-year career. The young singer/songwriter/guitarist’s new album FOLLOW landed at #22 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart--and #2 on the Heatseekers Regional chart for the South Central (which covers his home state of Texas ). The Billboard Heatseekers chart is for the week \' s top-selling albums by new or developing acts. COOPER’s MySpace page has also received a significant increase in total plays, now reaching over 2.3 million.

The new album--released August 11 on Tenacity Records--has received positive marks from the media including AOL Music that feel COOPER “…cements his rising star status with his second album of blues, country and soul.” The album’s first single is the powerful “Bring Me Down,” and over the song’s deep groove and buzzing guitars, COOPER lays down the law with lyrics celebrating his fierce independence.

Red Dirt Wunderkind Branches Out

John Zendejas and I headed down to the world famous Gilley\'s to interview the youngest reigning crown prince of the Red Dirt genre, Johnny Cooper. It didn\'t occur to me until later that I\'d actually lived in Dallas for more years than Johnny Cooper had been alive when he started touring, and I\'d never even set foot in the place in all that time. Some Texan I am.

Images of Urban Cowboy ran through my head, complete with the infamous mechanical bull (and yes, they still have it). While we were interviewing Johnny back in the green room, there was this line dance class being held out on the dance floor. This was very much a Texas establishment. No Blue Moon on tap (or in bottles) here, as this was the home of Bud Long Necks.

While the aficionados of the genre will probably argue that Oklahoma is the "real" home of the Red Dirt scene (and the color of the native soil around the Stillwater area gives it it\'s namesake), the old school Texans can point to Willie, Waylon and the boys as having quite a fair bit to do with the evolution of the whole thing.

As we meet Johnny Cooper, I\'m struck by two things:

He doesn\'t look like what one could expect. In fact, his hat struck me as something you\'d quite easily find in Jackie Greene\'s wardrobe.

Second, he\'s so damn YOUNG. Here\'s a kid who started touring at 15, had cut two albums by 17, and at the age of 20 had his 3rd album in the can with 5 years of touring under his belt. Impressive, to say the least.

John had told me about Johnny\'s legendary shows, and after seeing one for myself, I was really struck by the huge diversity of his fanbase. There were men and women and children of all ages, of all walks of life. While I was expecting a fair bit of cowboy hats and boots, I most certainly wasn\'t expecting what I witnessed that night.

Before the show, John and I sat down with Johnny and talked about his shows, breaking out a much expanded band, recording his new album "Follow", and growing as an artist. I walked away very impressed with his energy, sincerity, and his sense of direction.

Going Big Live

JZ : I’ve noticed something different from past gigs is tonight you’ve got a twelve piece band with you.

JC: Yeah, man!

JZ: How many times have you done that?

JC: This will be the second time that we’ve had all twelve people up on the stage and we’re now starting to package it as we can do a five man show, or we can do a twelve man show.

ML: Your traditional line-up is what, four?

JC: Five, we just added a keyboard player about three months ago.

ML: So what’s your twelve-piece?

JC: Bass, drums, two guitars, and then we have two backup singers, we have a DJ that comes in, and then we have three horn players and a percussionist.

JZ: Some of the stuff that I’ve heard on the new CD, the production is so much bigger than “Ignition” that I could see where that would kick ass on stage.

JC: Yeah, man, I tell you what. It’s hard to play a show like this and go back to not having all that stuff there… like tomorrow night we’re gonna have to play a show in Tulsa and not have the full band there. But, it’s all good; it’s all about working up to the point where you can travel around with twelve people all the time.

JZ: Right.
ML: Is it harder to rehearse a twelve piece than your normal line-up?

JC: Really, not so much man, and a lot of that is a credit to the musicians. The three horn players we bring in are all cats from Denton and UNT. It’s a big music school and the guys we use for the horn players are all from that school and they’re all trained musicians that can sight read.

ML: You just hand them charts and they’re good.

JC: You just hand them charts and they’re good to go. As long as those charts are correct, then there’s no worry at all. The percussionist guy – he’s just a groove machine, man, so you know we just let him go to town. He just gets it; he hasn’t listened to a lot of the stuff but maybe a couple of times, but when you’re groove based, as long as you can lock that groove then you’re good to go. Same with the DJ, we’ve worked with two different DJ’s and they both do a great job of just adding a different effect. I know for a fact that a lot of the fans that come out to the shows on regular basis are like- “Holy crap!” when that DJ comes out.

ML: It’s kind of a cultural shock-

JC: Yeah, and it’s really cool though ‘cause it’s something totally left field that we kinda throw at you, which I feel like we’re kinda left field in our genre anyway, so…

JZ: So it’s the second time that you’re doing this and you’re gonna have people out here that go to the Hank shows in McKinney that have seen the five piece band, or maybe the four piece band, but it’s gonna be the first time that they’ve seen the “production”…

JC: Exactly- and we pull out all the stops, man. From song one to the last song there’s something going on.

JZ: You still dropping covers in the set?

JC: We only play two cover songs and it’s a Robert Palmer song and a Michael Jackson song. Actually three songs, we do a song called “If Loving You Is Wrong”.

JZ: Then doing a lot more of the Johnny Cooper stuff-

JC: Oh yeah; the stuff we pick for covers are fun songs that we play for everybody because there may be people out there that may have not heard us and sometimes a good cover song can win those people over.

JZ: Absolutely… I’ve got a lot of friends who see the live show quite regularly and they always rave about how you’ll pull out a Thin Lizzy tune or a Timberlake song; so how do you pick the cover that’s gonna work?

JC: Man, ya know, I don’t know what’s ever gonna work…
[Everyone laughing]

JC: We kinda just go for it, man… and sometimes, dude, we’ve had people boo us ‘cause I’m up onstage beatboxing. But you know what, it’s what I love to do and that’s the way I write music. Sometimes it may be a rap song or a hip hop song and sometimes it’s a country rock song. I have no control of that really; it just comes out when it comes out.

ML: Do you think that it’s to some extent like a perception of the folks that are into the genre they’re used to? Like in the bluegrass arena, right, it’s a very regimented audience and they’re used to a certain format and then when you do something that’s like outside the edges of that you’re kind of pushing their ability to dig it, right?

JC: Yeah, it’s funny ‘cause I’ve seen that expression on people’s faces…

ML: What the hell is this?

JC: Yeah like “What in the world? - But I kinda like it…”
[Everyone laughing]

JC: Ya know, it’s cool when we’re playing a moderately hip hop type kinda song and there’s people out there two-steppin’ and it’s just cool to see that, more than anything. My main goal, I can speak for me and all the guys in the band, we just write and make music for everybody- for someone all the way across the world. We want one of our songs, at least, for them to be able to relate to no matter if it’s a guitar solo or one line that I sing. If I can help somebody relate one song to what’s going on in their life then that’s all I want.

ML: That’s cool and it’s to your credit that you’re willing to take chances in the genre because a lot of folks won’t do that. They’re like they know their audience and they don’t want to take a chance on alienating them or whatnot and so they stay within those artistic constraints that are imposed by the genre itself. To grab the sack and go out there and say no we’re going to go outside of that is a cool thing.

JC: Yeah, it’s interesting and it’s more fun than it is anything for me seeing the expressions on people’s faces when you pull something out that they may have not ever seen before and it’s just fun to feel that reaction. You can feel everybody and you can feel the vibes just floating around.

Getting Horny in the Studio

JZ: “Blue” is one of those songs that comes across as kind of outside of the red dirt thing- it’s different. Did you play that in the first twelve piece band show and how did it go over?

JC: Yes- it went great! When we were recording that song we were hearing horns and kinda like a Motown feel. It’s just great to be able to take all that right now traveling with the record on the road. It’s really cool because I haven’t always been able to do that. And now we get to have it where exactly what you hear on the record gets to be presented live, which is so much fun.

ML: That’s really cool…

JC: Because every day that the horns aren’t there I’m hearing them in my head. We go into a certain part and when they’re supposed to be there I hear them so it’s just fun to actually have them there.

ML: Now when you were starting out on the studio side of this album were you knowing at that time that you were going to have the band on the road, as well? Or was it something that came up later?

JC: You know I said to myself whenever we started making the record that I wanted to branch out and find different sounds, different things instead of just guitars, bass, drums. We would just start kinda experimenting and start throwing things over to a guy named John Painter who actually played all the horns himself, all three parts on every song…

JZ: Live horns?

JC: Yeah he did it all himself. He’d cut one part then go back in there and stack it and, man, he did a great job. He also went back and transcribed everything for us, charted everything for us so we could take it to the guys and let them play it (live).
When we were recording everything I just wanted to push the envelope a little bit and see what all we could get away with and make it sound good. We started adding horns, keyboards and all kinds of stuff and it was a lot of fun. Through the whole record there’s not really many parts where there’s or never a feeling where it’s like somebody going “Look at me, look at me while I play this guitar solo…” or “Look at me while I play this horn part”. Everybody has their one little section and everybody gets highlighted. The keyboards will have a part where they get highlighted. Then the horns will get highlighted. Then the guitar will get highlighted; the same with the bass. Everybody gets a turn to almost take like a solo throughout the record. It’s really cool to hear they keys do their thing then the guitar play off that and the horns play off that.
It’s just fun- how much the record sounds like a real band. The guys that we recorded with; our drummer, a guy named Tommy, is from Finland and he came down and did all the drums. I played rhythm guitar and my bass player Cody played all the bass parts. We had a guy come in and play all the keyboard parts that’s a friend of ours that plays out with the B52’s right now. His name is Paul and he used to play with Prince and all kinds of cool cats. We all just got together and it really felt like we’d been playing together for thirty years or something…

JZ: It’s got a very live feel to it.

JC: Yeah, it’s really funny, but there was something that happened that first week. We were all just on the same page. I can’t give you an answer of why we were… I sang some stuff on the scratch vocal takes that we ended up using because I sang some of the lines better that first week of recording than when I did when I went back in to do a final vocal take. There was just that feeling going on. Ya know, you can take the best musicians in the world and chart out everything on that record and tell them to go play it and it won’t sound the same.

JZ: Right.
ML: In the studio did you do the backing tracks- guitar, bass, drums, and then overdub the rest of the instrumentation?

JC: Yeah- we did drums and bass first. We all played together and just made sure that we had all the drums and bass that we needed and from there I would go do guitar parts. Add on and add on.

ML: So it’s pretty much a layering process vs. a live take kinda thing…

JC: Yeah, it is. It’s a layering process for sure. But it depends- some songs you do the whole live thing. A lot of the songs on the record you’re listening to the first to the fourth take of drums and bass. We only tracked everything about three or four times. I hear all these horror stories of people going into the vocal booth and they’re on take a thousand five hundred… on one song.

[Everyone laughing]

JC: My thing is, if you can’t sing it right by the fourth or fifth time then it’s not gonna get any better. If you can’t make it happen in the first five takes…

ML: And you kind of lose that cohesive feel that there’s a band there when you do that much overdubbing and you do that much single person in the booth with the cans. There’s some of the feel that gets lost.

JC: Yeah, a lot of that comes down to producers, too. If you have good producers that are doing what they’re supposed to do then everything runs smoothly.

ML: Who’d you use for this one?

JC: We had two guys – Glen Rosenstein and Dexter Green. Dex also played a lot on the record as well as produced. He played a lot of the lead guitar stuff. He’s an awesome musician- the dude can play guitar better than most people I know, he can play drums better than most people I know, he can play keyboards better than most people I know and then on top of that his ears are just amazing.

ML: So he’s a Rick Parker type…

JC: Yeah, man, it’s ridiculous. Sometimes makes me sick just how good he is…
[Everyone laughing]

JC: And it’s funny because, ya know, he sits at home in his basement and records all the time and he may see sunlight, like, every four days…

ML: Definitely a Rick Parker type.
JZ: Is that where you recorded the new cd, at Dexter’s place?

JC: Yeah, we recorded everything in his basement in Nashville. We went up there and I hung out at Dexter’s house and we tracked some acoustic stuff when we were writing some songs. He and I wrote a few tunes for this record and, man, we got to talking and just felt like there was no reason to go spend a bunch of money on a studio when we can do it here and make it sound just as good.

ML: Now did you do the mix there?

JC: Yeah, we did all the mix there, too- a buddy of ours Joe came in and mixed it all down. He’s done a lot of stuff with Ben Folds mixing down a lot of his records… so Joe came in and he’s just another one of those guys that’s just amazing when he gets… I found out with this process, the key ingredients to making a good record is:
Number 1) Have good musicians; if you have good musicians, that’s a big chunk out of it.
Number 2) Have somebody that knows how to record stuff well, as far as mic placement goes and stuff like that…

ML: Especially on drums, phasing errors on drums are the shits to get out once they’re in there.

JC: Oh yeah… other than that you need a good engineer that’s back there hitting record and doing all the stuff and that’s all you need, man. You don’t need a freakin’ million dollar studio to make it happen. You really don’t. As long as you have good musicians and people that know how to capture your sound. That’s all that matters…

JZ: You guys using ProTools?

JC: Oh yeah, ProTools. ProTools all the way. Everything on this record is all straight up somebody played it.

JZ: Awesome…

JC: There’s a few things on there that you might think was a drum machine or something like that, but that’s just because our drummer was that good!

Branching Out At 20

JZ: You spend a lot of time on the road, doing a lot of shows a year and you’ve been doing the “Ignition” thing for a while… at what point did you go “it’s time to make a new record”?

JC: It was just time. I recorded “Ignition” when I was 17 years old. I’m 20 now and we got a long life out of that cd. We recorded the cd, put it out and it really didn’t start catching any wind beneath it’s wings until about a year after it was out. So it was like we had this record out for a year and now people are finally getting it and its brand new to a whole bunch of people who thought it came out two weeks ago or something. So we just tried to milk that record as much as we could and we got four songs radio play on the Texas – Oklahoma market that are playing all the Texas music stuff.
You know, I was going through some different changes with the band and getting everything figured out. I had a bunch of songs together and it just got to the point where I was ready. I’m 20, it’s time to go do another record.

JZ: I saw a live acoustic video of you in a radio station studio on youtube doing “Try” (that ended up on the new album) and I thought, man, what a really great performance and it’s very cool how it fleshed out on the cd…

JC: Yeah, It’s like night and day, man…

JZ: But, it’s a great song like it was and you just took it and blew it up bigger.

JC: That’s one of the more difficult songs that we do, man, is that one. It’s a real groove oriented song and if that groove isn’t there, it just doesn’t sound right. It’s a tough song to play and we battled for months in the rehearsal studio with the live band just locking it down. The cool thing about the new record is that there are so many little things; there’s so many cool little parts that make a song have its own identity. You have to be really on top of all the little parts that go into that. It’s just tough ‘cause everybody has to be at the top of their game and making sure all the little stuff is there…

JZ: The devil’s in the details…

JC: There ya go, exactly man and I’m a huge detail oriented person. So, I feel bad for the rest of the dudes in the band, like my bass player is the same way, but if you mess up- I’m gonna hear it. I am gonna hear it and I’m not gonna yell at you or something like that, but I’m just gonna let you know that you messed up, man. That way it doesn’t happen again.

JZ: So, once you got it rolling, did the songs come in a short period of time or are they songs that you wrote over a long period of time and took into the studio to flesh them out?

JC: Some of them were and some of them weren’t. We had a few songs that we wrote, you know, the week that we were there recording. The majority of the stuff, I’d say about eight out of the ten songs I’ve been, you know, messing around with, playing with for about four or five months.

ML: So ideas from the road type of thing?

JC: Yeah, yeah a lot these songs what you hear now on the record is…

ML: The evolution of something you wrote in a hotel…

JC: Yeah, you can youtube videos that you can see the evolution, man, where you can go watch these videos and see how this song got started. And there are a lot of things that are different. Some of the songs we have a different guitar part that was there. Now that guitar parts not there anymore, but it’s replaced with something different. Man, it’s just funny… I was just on youtube the other day looking at some of our stuff that’s on there watching some of these videos from four or five months ago and just going “yeah, that’s how we used to play that ha ha ha ha.”

ML: How much time did you spend in the studio on this one?

JC: We were there for about a total of a month and a half, but it was real weird ‘cause we played every weekend. So I’d play Thursday, Friday, Saturday, hop on a plane Sunday morning, get to Nashville Sunday night. We would record Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then I’d fly back to where ever our gig was on Thursday. I did that for about a month and a half of just constantly going back and forth, back and forth, just to get everything squared away.

ML: So was it a challenge doing the gear switch between the live and the studio side?

Red Dirt Wunderkind Branches Out

JC: Man, it was really kind of refreshing, in a way. Cause when you’re in the studio you are, like, focused on one thing for twelve hours. So it was nice to spend a week recording and then come play live ‘cause you can kind of get rid of things. Now where it was confusing on some parts was for a good while, while were recording some of the songs we were playing live were a little bit different. We had some different, um, some of the songs weren’t structured as they are now…

ML: Minor differences in arrangements…

JC: Yeah, the arrangements on songs were different while we were recording. So that would be a little weird, ‘cause we’d go record and that’s how it would be for the cd, but then we’d come back and play live and some things were a little bit different. There may be one song that has a turnaround that was two times instead of one, so I always had to shut my mind off and remember that when we started playing live, some things are different. ‘Cause for the week before that I was cutting the song in a whole different way. It was just weird having to bounce back and forth having to remember that there was supposed to be something here until we got to the point where we got everything recorded and everybody in the band could sit down and listen to it and go, alright this is the way the arrangements are going to be from now on.
It’s cool now ‘cause we got everything on a click track and we can play our whole set live and you can actually take our cd and if you were to videotape us playing live you can take our cd and it matches up perfectly. Like, my words, you could videotape me singing that song and take the actual song off the cd and put them together and it matches up perfectly… That’s kinda cool, in a way.

ML: A lot of times there tempo variances- speed up, slow down, that sort of thing.

JC: We always make our drummer play with a click track, so that way there’s no finger to blame on anybody- if you rush it, it’s your own damned fault ‘cause you’ve got CLICK CLICK CLICK going on in your head…

JZ: On the road, you’ve stayed on the Texas-OK circuit for a while… I’ve noticed you’ve got a date coming up in N. Carolina, have you got plans at getting this cd out on the road to places you haven’t played before?

JC: Oh definitely, that’s my main goal… I want to be playing anywhere and everywhere that we can. I think this new record is a good step to getting that direction. Number one, you got to have something that’s marketable to the general public, man. If you don’t have that, then you’re never going to be able to reach that goal. So a lot of writing this record, like I was saying earlier, was writing songs for somebody a million miles away that they can still jam to. That’s what we tried to do with this record. I can’t tell you if it worked or not. Maybe when I’m 60 or something, I’ll let you know if it worked. Right now I just enjoy getting to do it, more than anything. I get to wake up every day, hang out with my best friends, and play music. The fact that we’re getting a chance to play in N Carolina and Washington D.C. and some of these other places is just really cool ‘cause that’s what we want to be doing…

ML: So you done any festival gigs?

JC: Oh yeah. Summertime, always, always… I mean, this week already, yesterday and the day before that we played two outdoor festivals. So during the summertime every weekend we’re outside doing something.

ML: It has its pros and cons in this weather…

JC: Oh yeah, it sure does, man, but it’s good for ya.

JZ: You’ve got a great reputation as a live act. You really want a band to come off live better than they do on record…

JC: We’re just going with what feels right. We’re a bunch of dudes that, I like to say, we play music for a good reason. And the reason why I say that is ‘cause I know a lot of bands that play music for the wrong reasons. More than anything, music always comes first for us. Don’t get me wrong. We have an awesome job filled with all kinds of perks of being in a band. But, if you can’t make the music come first every day then you’re never gonna be able to succeed at what you want to do. For us, that’s the one thing that I’ve always felt blessed for. It’s that everybody in our group, no matter what, they just want to make sure the music is good. And if that’s good then everything else is kosher. We could be having to sit out in the heat for 12 hours in our van, but as long as we sounded good that night- it don’t matter. That’s why we’re here. It’s the only thing we love to do- play music.

ML: So for the folks that are gonna read this and have never heard you or heard of you, how would you describe the introduction of what you do?

JC: You know, what I’d say more than anything is with us you’re gonna get a little bit of everything. You’re gonna get some funk. You’re gonna get some rock. You’re gonna get some jazz. You’re gonna get some blues. You’re gonna get some country. You’re gonna get some hip hop. We’re gonna give you a little bit of everything. And what I always tell anybody that’s never listened to any of our music is, if you don’t like the song we’re playing right now, wait a couple minutes for the next one. I just try to ask everybody to do that. We just have fun. Our main live goal is for you to come out and forget about everything that you had to deal with that week. For the hour and a half that you spend with us, no matter where we are, we’re gonna take you out of your every day normal life. That way if you had a bad week at work or whatever, Friday night we’ll make sure that you don’t think about it one bit. And we’ll make sure that every time you come out to one of our shows, you leave with a smile and feeling glad that you got to come hang out. We’re gonna make sure you have a good time.

LAWTON, Okla. – In a building adjacent to the athletic field at Cameron University, singer-songwriter-guitarist Johnny Cooper grabs a Coke out of the refrigerator in the largely empty room and sits down and smiles.

It was two years earlier, when your Red Dirt Reporter was writing for the Texas Music Times, that Cooper, then 18, sat down in a similar way in and talked about how he started out as a drummer in his early teens and then switched to playing guitar and singing.

With a love of music coursing through his veins, Cooper was determined to make it in the world of Texas/Red Dirt music. His tenacity (which is also the name of the record label that released his new album, Follow), musical abilities and natural charm began to pay off in those early years.

And then the moment came. It was in 2004, opening up for Oklahoma Red Dirt band The Great Divide, that the young Wichita Falls, Texas resident started really getting heard, particularly after releasing a live disc called Live at The Pub. With help from his father Jimmy, his mother Cindy Saillant and the backing of A.A. Bottom, later known as the Johnny Cooper Band, the young musician was getting gigs left and right, averaging several hundred a year.

And this, while still in high school.

Five years after that golden opportunity, here at a gig at Cameron University, opening up for Canadian country group Emerson Drive, Cooper smiles and talks about Follow, his follow-up to Ignition, which sold 25,000 copies and spawned the regional hit “Texas To You.”

Cooper played some songs from Follow during his opening set.

“I like the fans to make that judgement,” Cooper said. “Rock, Red Dirt, blues, funk, pop … whatever you feel bent to call it, go with it.”

Cooper said he spent a month in Nashville recording Follow with Dexter Green and Glenn Rosenstein and came away with 10 new songs, including the single “Bring Me Down,” which is currently in the twenties on the Texas Music Chart. Follow was released August 11.

“We had 1,375 (record) sales in the first week,” Cooper said excitedly.

While Red Dirt Report has yet to hear the new recording, other than the guitar-and-organ propelled radio-friendly rocker “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” some of the new songs were played during the opening set.

While he gets compared to pop star John Mayer a lot, Cooper is definitely his own man. Asked what he is listening to these days, he says “Kings of Leon,” without hesitating.

“They are phenomenal,” he said, noting he plans to catch their Oklahoma City show in October. “I try to do what they do every day as a musician.”

Asked about tonight’s opening gig for an internationally-recognized group like Emerson Drive (covered here at RDR), Cooper grins and references the fact that his merchandise stand was teeming with fans, looking for a T-shirt, CD or autograph. And it was true. Cooper had to postpone this interview because of the long line at his merchandise table. Emerson Drive may have been the headliner but it was Johnny Cooper who appeared to be the more popular performer if merchandise table lines can be used as a measure.

But that, he said, is because he has played Lawton a lot and worked on several film projects with students at Cameron. One was on Red Dirt music and the other was about dirt track racing. It was here in Lawton, at a club called Duvallz, that your Red Dirt Reporter first interviewed Cooper. This is clearly his backyard and he loves performing here.

Noting the different kinds of T-shirts he offers for sale, Cooper says, “(Merchandising) is a big part of it. You have to know to think stuff like that. John Mayer and Justin Timberlake, they have to come up with good marketing ploys.”

And if that crowd at his merch table was any indication, Cooper is a shrewd businessman to boot.

Supporting Cooper is his band, which includes: bassist Cody Shaw, guitarist Ben Shaw, drummer Randy Burch and keyboardist Nick Ghanbari. During the show, they run through covers like Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” and portions of Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.” And the originals, many from Follow, have a groovy, bluesy, and even poppy jamband feel. That is the think about the Johnny Cooper Band – they are well-rehearsed and very much in sync with one another when performing.

And as for Cooper himself, he is easygoing, confident and has a Joe Cocker-esque performing style that comes across as authentic and interesting.

As for the new music, it sounds, well, less Red Dirt-oriented. Country music it’s not. It’s definitely more blues and pop oriented than his previous material. For this critic, this is evidence of growth and a move to seek sounds beyond the confines that Texas/Red Dirt music offers.

Cooper knows he has his critics. His hometown paper,the Wichita Falls Times Record News has given him positive write-ups, although the criticism leveled at Cooper by that paper’s album reviewer is pretty strong, “wondering how many old fans he will lose” heading in this new direction.

Regardless, Cooper is comfortable with his musical path and is already looking ahead, with Follow out only a couple of weeks.

“I’m so glad to have the album out,” Cooper said, adding, “And later this fall we will begin work on the next album. In the meantime I’m just glad that everybody is coming out and giving us their support.”

Always a humble guy, Cooper emphasizes how he wants everyone to know how much he appreciates the support of his growing numbers of fans.

“I want to always let the fans know that I’ll stay at the merchandise booth and talk to everybody and be nice to everybody.”

And hearing him say it, you know he means it.

Discount tickets for CU Emerson Drive/Johnny Cooper concert now available

Cameron University is providing a discount ticket price for members of the military and all students for its upcoming fall concert, featuring Emerson Drive and Johnny Cooper. The high-energy concert takes place on Friday, Aug. 21 at Cameron Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. The concert will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.

Members of the military and their families and students of any educational facility can purchase tickets at the discounted rate of $10 each. General admission tickets are $20. There is no charge for children 6 and under. In addition, CU students, faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5 each.

Emerson Drive’s energizing live show has made them the most popular band on the college circuit, resulting in the 2008 Reader’s Choice Award for “Best Major Performance” from Campus Activities Magazine. It’s a “good news and bad news” kind of week.

Let’s get to the bad news first.

‘Follow’ by Johnny Cooper

As a music commentator, it’s always a pleasure to help out a promising career with a good word or two in print. But integrity in this music commentary gig requires absolute honesty, and there are times it’s not always a pleasurable thing. This space is about American-style country music in all its many flavors, and I intend to keep it that way.

With that said, let’s talk about Johnny Cooper’s new CD, “Follow.”

I’ve been looking forward to the release of “Follow” for a long time. But when I got the time to give it a listen, I was disappointed.

After listening to the set, I realized that the opener, “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” is something of a commentary on Cooper’s career so far. The current single, “Bring Me Down,” may be rooted in Red Dirt, but it hammers home the same sentiment.

Most of the songs run to more of a radio-friendly pop-esque feel, with easily forgettable melodies and shallow themes. “Can’t Hold On To You” and “Try” are good examples. And what’s up with the overproduced horn treatment on the “Take Your Number” arrangement? It just doesn’t fit Cooper’s still-developing vocal chops and gives the song a distinct weekday karaoke flavor.

Now, I did like “Crazy” quite a bit, and it would make a good radio single. But one strong song out of 10 does not make for a hit album.

In the Red Dirt world, Johnny Cooper was a leader — a fresh and interesting young voice that doubtlessly influenced many other aspiring Red Dirt artists, and he seemed destined to become one of the uniquely homegrown sound’s most prominent figures.

But with “Follow,” Cooper has chosen a different road — one that has taken him from being a budding leader to being a ... well, just another follower. It’s not good Red Dirt music, it’s not good pop music, it’s not good funk music and it’s definitely not country music of any kind.

There’s a saying in Texas music: “Dance with those who brung you.” I could be wrong, of course, but I seriously doubt that the fans who brought Johnny Cooper this far will appreciate being told “I can feel you now, but I can’t hold on to you” (from “Can’t Hold On To You”).

I truly hope whoever Cooper is trying to attract with “Follow” embraces his new musical direction. But I can’t help wondering how many old fans he will lose in the process.

As a 22 year old singer/songwriter, I am often referred to as one of the young up and coming artists in our music world. To me, this is a term I am proud to be associated with. During a radio interview last week I was discussing how some of the artists in this group have started to realize that you have to be very different in order to stick out. I would like to take this opportunity and elaborate on one of my favorite artsits in this scene who has taken some flack for maybe being TOO different … Johnny Cooper.

I feel that change is neccessary in music. It also can’t be fought. With age, comes change. Change in mindset. Change in attitude. Change in direction. I went through some of this change between my first record and the new one, and I can feel more change coming as I settle back into the reality that, soon, I will have to begin the process of thinking about the next record.

When I heard Johnny’s new record, “Follow”, for the first time, I realized why so many people in this industry went, “Whoa, whoa, whoa! What the hell is this.” To me this record is a beacon of hope for all of us who remember this scene as one that is for music. Somewhere through the years it has become somewhat commercial, and “Follow” blows the doors wide open. It is not a country record. It is not a rock record. It is a record. Full of everything that is Johnny Cooper.

When did we start to fear change? Change is different for everyone, and for those of us who have been around Johnny for many years, we could tell what was coming. I’ve been asked before, “Have you heard the Johnny Cooper record? He has strayed from the last one.” In the most polite tone, I always respond with this simple answer, “So.” If we begin to put restrictions on how much people can change, or put up barricades to block off the paths certain musicians want to take, doesn’t that do a huge injustice to the art of music? If change varies why should there be a standard for it. If I want to make a more pop influenced record next time, shouldn’t you give it the same shot as a more country record?

Change can be a beautiful thing if it is respected, and once you start to fear it, you begin down a slippery slope that leads to nothing good. I am proud of Johnny for doing what he wanted, and I am proud to be in a scene where we have the luxory to make records without the control of someone else to say, “You can’t do that song.” or ” I don’t think we will release this record. It just won’t sell.” We must all embrace the fact that as time goes by, people become different. If they didn’t, music would be no fun.

Don’t fear what might be different. Embrace it. Give it the same chance you would anything else. You never know when your eyes will be opened to something you didn’t quite understand before.

Go buy “Follow”. Put it in, turn off all distractions, put on the headphones, and absorb the music. I bet you’ll be surprised.

Premieres "One Dream: Dirt Track Racing"

(Lawton, OK) A group of Cameron students is carrying on a 10-year university tradition this summer with the upcoming documentary "One Dream: Dirt Track Racing."

This year's documentary, a product of the “Producing the Documentary” summer course, focuses on dirt track drivers and the trials and tribulations they go through each week, on and off the track. The documentary premieres July 23 at the Cameron University Theatre. This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 pm, preshow events set for 6:30 with the documentary premiering at 7 pm. The evening will be filled with live music, door prizes and a meet and greet with featured drivers.

“One Dream” features drivers such as: NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace; three-time National World of Outlaw (WoO) defending Champion, Donny Schatz; 20-time National WoO champion, Steve Kinser; the “Kansas Tornado”, Jon Johnson; Southwest Oklahoma favorites, Bob Horn, Joseph Horn, and Joe Bob Lee as well as Ken Lutters of Kansas

Producer Kyle Luetters, a radio/television junior, hopes to bring greater insight to the sport of dirt track racing. "Many think that racing is nothing but people driving in circles chasing each other. It's so much more and it's my hope that this documentary will shed some light on that," Luetters said. "If we can get some of the people that are not big racing fans to appreciate dirt track racing a little more, then we've done our jobs."

This course has produced such award-winning documentaries in the past as, "North of Austin/West of Nashville: Red Dirt Music" and most recently, "Ya'll Watch This: Red River Indies." Matt Jenkins, Cameron professor and executive producer, said "One Dream" is one of the most ambitious documentaries the class has ever undertaken. "In this documentary, we are traveling more than we have in past documentaries," he said. “Communication Department and university support has been unprecedented.”

Production team responsibilities are divided, taking advantage of each student’s strengths, including filming, public relations, editing and website design. Director, Cecilio Ramirez-Cibes, a radio/television senior, said part of the accomplishment of working on a large documentary is seeing all of the individual parts come together in the end.

“Everyone gets together and combines their skills to produce one full-length documentary,” he said. “Whether it's public relations, filming, interviewing, directing or editing, each section is linked together to finish this project in an eight-week course. This year, we're blessed with a good number of students participating in each needed function.”

In addition to the action at the racetrack and the incredible talent of the drivers, the film’s soundtrack will feature original music from award-winning Oklahoma and Texas bands such as Arbuckle Xpress, Johnny Cooper, and Under the Influence. The music researcher for the documentary notes that, “Arbuckle Xpress lends unprecedented support of the project and we greatly thank them.” This is their first venture with a Cameron University Film Production. Musician, Johnny Cooper whose song's appeared in “North of Austin/West of Nashville” the documentary, and has a new CD entitled "FOLLOW" in stores on August 11TH, has also graciously signed onto the project by permitting use of his songs in the film. The bands Brison Bursey, The Gringo Kings, and Under the Influence are in the process of signing with the production with more bands and musicians soon to follow.

At age 20, Texas singer, songwriter and guitarist JOHNNY COOPER is already a well-traveled musician, having released two albums--with 2007’s IGNITION selling over 25,000 copies--and performed over 800 shows, averaging 200 a year.

He returns August 11 with FOLLOW (Tenacity Records), an evocative blend of soul, blues, rock and pop that’s exemplified by the first single “Bring Me Down.” Over the song’s deep groove and buzzing guitars, COOPER lays down the law:

“You say my music’s got too much edge

Well hell yeah, that’s how I was taught

Screaming guitars and people up on the bars

That’s the way we like to rock

For some reason you’ll always look at me

Just like I’m a kid

Why you creeping around out back

Watching every little thing I did”

The disc expands on the style for which COOPER became known--
“red dirt,” a Texas southern rock, country and blues hybrid--and was produced by Glenn Rosenstein and Dexter Green. Rosenstein has either produced or co- produced such artists as Ziggy Marley, Jill Sobule and Michelle Shocked and engineered songs by James Brown, Talking Heads and Sting. Green’s credits include co-writing and producing the Collective Soul 2004 hit “Better Now.”

“Well, it still is ‘red dirt,’ it still is rock, it still is funk, pop, Texas country, R&B, it is still more than anything, me,” explains COOPER about FOLLOW.

Gifted with a rich emotive voice that illuminates his lyrics, COOPER says the disc “is another chapter of my life, every song is a short snip-it of all the things I have encountered in the past few years, good times...bad times...and everything in between, I believe the music has evolved because I have evolved...the older you get the less and less you are scared to try new things! Branch out and test your limits. Most importantly this record was a team effort. The producers and musicians had a huge role--something just clicked when we all were together! The talent of everyone who played on the record naturally made the music come alive.”

Opening track, the soul-powered “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” showcases his guitar skills with an uncompromising solo. The blues-influenced pop-rock blend on “Bring Me Down,” the album’s first single, was written by COOPER “about some folks who forgot the reason why you play music,” he says. “It’s a musical sucker-punch to people who don’t do things for the right reason.” Other album stand-outs include “Crazy” and “Take Your Number.”

COOPER is proud of the new record and sound. “I believe what people hear on the album they also want to hear live. The cool part about our live show is, it is always evolving and it gets better every week. We played the majority of these songs live a couple months before we recorded them and that’s when you really work out all the kinks and get the song to what you hear now on the album…the building process is the most fun.”

COOPER has practically grown up on-stage and that’s where he will remain throughout the rest of the year because that’s what he truly loves.

“Our goal is to make you forget about everything else and just cut loose for a couple hours.”
